It’s the app I’ve been using to type this post so far, and it’s a fairly typical example of your minimalist Mac writing app, of which there are many, most (if not all) of which center around the MultiMarkdown syntax. Since it’s a popular app and was recently upgraded to version 3.0, let’s take a look at iA Writer first. Nonetheless, there is a learning curve, so the tool doesn’t quite get out of the way of creativity like some of the more minimalist apps do. Fortunately, it does also have a distraction-free “Composition Mode” as well as a typewriter mode. But that strength is also its main weakness: it can be overwhelming. So where do we turn?įirst, let me just say that, for book writing, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better than Scrivener. What if you like to jot down snippets of text as the ideas come to you and then flesh out those snippets and put them together into a longer, completed piece? We all have our own methods and preferences, and the Medium draft editor isn’t going to meet all of these needs. Even sell our stories to other publications.Īnd what about researching our work and organizing our ideas. Or maybe put together a collection of our writings into an e-book. We’ll probably also want to post to our blogs. Plus, if we’re serious about our writing, we probably aren’t going to just want to post everything to Medium and only to Medium.
But like any app, it has it’s limitations. Of course, as Medium writers, we also have to deal with Medium’s draft editor, which is a perfectly fine, distraction-free editor and is one of the things we love so much about Medium in the first place. I’ve tried so many different writing apps over the years, that I’m not even sure which is the best one for my own particular writing needs, so I thought now it was about time to figure it out.
If it’s a stylish - preferably minimalist - writing app that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, odds are I’ve got it. My specific addiction is writing apps for Mac and iOS.
